It’s all over now: Calm returns to Ghana after post elections tension

ACCRA, GHANA (ANS) -- The atmosphere of tension and anxiety is now over as the president-elect from the country’s December polls, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, was formally sworn into office at an inaugural ceremony on Wednesday, January 7, 2009.

For some weeks now Ghanaians had been living under tension following the country’s general elections and a run-off between the tow main contenders, Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akufo-Addo of the incumbent (until the handing over) New Patriotic Party (NPP))

Church services on Sunday January 4, 2009, were devoted as thanksgiving to God for sparing the country its peace and political stability which was being threatened under the tension that characterized the elections. A charismatic Christian, the new president, John Atta Mills was himself in church to offer thanks to God for his victory, where he pledged to be a "president for all"

He said now that it is all over it was time for Ghanaians to give thanks to God for having brought them this far. “There were all kinds of predictions but God has seen us through and let us always remember that this country belongs to God.

My dream is that Ghana in this century will be the nation that leads Africa. An educated, thriving, and prosperous democracy, that we can hold up as an example to the world of what Africa can be, when its people move and work together”, said the president.

Professor John Evans Atta Mills’ victory in the run-off, which many see as a miracle, has great significance for the Christian community.

In the county’s political history, any person who led in the first run won the run-off. But this time round, Professor Mills who was behind his competitor in the first run overtook him in the run-off., thus, “breaking the order of the rule.”

Through out the electioneering, Professor Mills who worships at the Pure Fire Ministries, sought the grace of God as the source of his victory. “By the Grace of God…by the Grace of God…” was a phrase he used almost every time he spoke on his campaigns platforms.

President Mills, who prior to the elections had been sick, was being mocked by some of his political opponents “for running around for prayers.” At a point in time there were even media publications that he was dead. It is gratifying that these trying moments of his life rather helped strengthened his faith in God. And to those who know this, his victory at the polls is not a surprise.

Prof. Atta Mills, 64, is a university (law) professor and a former vice president. He is the third President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
